The X - ray Globular Cluster Population in NGC 1399
We report on the Chandra observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC 1399, concentrating on the X-ray sources identified with globular clusters (GCs). A large fraction of the 2-10 keV X-ray emission in the 8′ × 8′ Chandra image is resolved into point sources with luminosities ≥ 5× 10 ergs s−1. These sources are most likely Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs). In a region imaged by HST about 70% of th...
متن کاملA Comparison of Ultraluminous X - Ray Sources in Ngc 1399 and the Antennae Galaxies ( Ngc 4038 / 4039 )
The temporal and spectral properties of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs, L X > 2 × 10 39 ergs s −1) and bright X-ray sources (L X > 3 × 10 38 ergs s −1) are examined and compared in two extremely different host environments: the old elliptical galaxy NGC 1399 and the young, starforming Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039). ULXs in NGC 1399 show little variability on either long or short time sca...
متن کاملOn the Universal X-ray Luminosity Function of Binary X-ray Sources in Galaxies
The empirically determined universal power-law shape of X-ray luminosity function of high mass X-ray binaries in galaxies is explained by fundamental mass-luminosity and mass-radius relations for massive stars. The unique possibilities offerred by modern X-ray space observatories Chandra and XMM-Newton make it possible to observe point-like X-ray sources in nearby galaxies which allows studies ...

متن کاملAngular Correlations of the X–ray Background and Clustering of Extragalactic X–ray Sources
The information content of the autocorrelation function (ACF) of intensity fluctuations of the X–ray background (XRB) is analyzed. The tight upper limits set by ROSAT deep survey data on the ACF at arcmin scales imply strong constraints on clustering properties of X–ray sources at cosmological distances and on their contribution to the soft XRB. If quasars have a clustering radius r0 = 12–20 Mp...
